A Study using Corel Painter 12

                                                                  final painting

                                                                       sketch

I thought it would be fun to use the pony sketch to practice with all the bells and whistles in Corel Painter 12.  Beginning with a simple sketch of the pony, scanning it into the computer to work on the file. Adding layers to develop a background scene I began to explore the different sprays and pattern gradients providing texture for tree trunks, trees, grass, stream, rocks, and even the little swallows swooping up above. Adding another layer by "lifting the canvas to watercolor layer" I gave the pony a painterly effect. This action lifted the original sketch off the canvas (or original layer) and duplicated the sketch on a working layer. For the tail and mane I used a "fuzzy clone" spray which gave this little girl some rich "sweetness". The final layer was added to apply a drop shadow. When I felt the illustration was complete the final step was to "drop all layers". This action merged all layers onto the canvas (or original layer).

I am finding that Corel Painter 12 has an interface which is a bit more complicated than I am used to. I feel with more practice and patience I will be able to increase my creativity to new levels. If you enjoy a challenge and are hungry to learn more than you will aspire to new heights with Corel Painter 12.

The Flora Project

Flora the Book Promotion  Good morning everyone and Happy Spring! I've recently accepted a commission to create a doll to  represent the character of the book "Flora". I've been tasked with making 25 dolls to go with the book. Flora doll While making these dolls I thought I would share with you some design tips in crochet with what I've learned while making these dolls. Unfortunately I can't share the pattern itself but I can share some do's and don't(s) which may make your design projects go a bit more smoothly. For instance: Tip #1 (which I may have come to learn a bit late in the game) for a smoother finish look around the edges of sleeves and dresses use a slip stitch around the final row of the piece. The sleeve on the right is the sleeve with the slip stitch. The one on the left is not and it leaves a definite mark at the end of the row.  Let me know your thoughts about it or if you have any other suggestions to benefit all you lovely crochet-ers...
